Endogenous Fluctuations in a Bounded Rationality Economy: Learning Non-perfect Foresight Equilibria

چکیده
We study forward-looking economic models assuming that agents take one step ahead expectations looking back k time periods. We show that the dynamics of the economy with such an expectation function are characterized by the coexistence of perfect foresight and nonperfect foresight cycles. The stability of all these periodic solutions under bounded rationality is related to the stability of the perfect foresight cycles. Fading memory learning in a class of forward-looking models with an application to hyperinflation dynamics
Ž We analyze a class of non-linear deterministic forward-looking economic models the . state today is affected by today’s and tomorrow’s expectation under bounded rationality learning. The learning mechanism proposed in this paper defines the expected state as a geometric average of past observations. We show that the memory of the learning process plays a stabilizing role: it enlarges the loca...

This paper proposes an alternative explanation to recurrent hyperinflations other than bounded rationality by explicitly considering the global dynamics of an economy with credit market frictions. In this paper we show that hyperinflations are self-generated and are manifestations of the underlying global dynamic properties of an economy with perfect foresight rational agents that face credit r...
متن کاملLearning and Equilibrium Selection in a Monetary Overlapping Generations Model with Sticky Prices
We study adaptive learning in a monetary overlapping generations model with sticky prices and monopolistic competition for the case where learning agents observe current endogenous variables. Observability of current variables is essential for informational consistency of the learning setup with the model set up but generates multiple temporary equilibria when prices are flexible and prevents a...
متن کاملOn Learning and the Stability of Cycles
We study a general equilibrium model where the multiplicity of stationary periodic perfect foresight equilibria is pervasive. We investigate the extentof which agents can learn to coordinate on stationary perfect foresight cycles. The example economy, taken from Grandmont (1985), is an endowment overlapping generations model with fiat money, where consumption in the first and second periods of ...
متن کاملGetting Big Too Fast: Strategic Dynamics with Increasing Returns and Bounded Rationality
Neoclassical models of strategic behavior have yielded many insights into competitive behavior, despite the fact that they often rely on a number of assumptions—including instantaneous market clearing and perfect foresight—that have been called into question by a broad range of research. Researchers generally argue that these assumptions are “good enough” to predict an industry’s probable equil...
